Turn Away Thy Son

This behind-the-scenes account of the headline-making events in September 1957 at a small high school in Little Rock, Arkansas provides a key chapter in Civil Rights history. Elisabeth Jacoway grew up in Little Rock and was in school there when, despite the hostile resistance of the governor and many townspeople, Central High School was integrated with the help of U.S. troops as the press recorded all. Many years later, Jacoway was moved to research the events in her home town--some of which she was aware of, others from which she had been sheltered. She reports what she learned through many interviews with her neighbors (including the students known then as the Little Rock Nine ) who tell how they saw the historic events unfold and how they were affected.
